I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 and it isnt really much different it just has a few more filters and accepts all brushes. Its also a bit easier to use i think.

Well i only ever had PS7 or 8 (i'm not sure) and i found photoshop so much better and easier to use, it has lots of styles you can apply and its quicker and if you want a brush in PSP you can just see the brush tool and on photoshop you can asctually see the outline of the brush so you know where to place it exactly. If i were you i'd get both PSP and PS and then see which you prefare.

Photoshop is actually used for photo manipulation. I usually use Adobe Illustrator for my vexels and vectors.

I use Photoshop CS (2 or 3, doesn't matter) for photo retouching and Adobe Imageready for animation.

I use Photoshop CS3. I guess any Photoshop is fine as long as it's version 7.0 and above. You'll just be able to use more brushes and patterns and stuff in CS3
