View Full Version : Blegh, elitism

This is inspired by the drama that's been going on lately ^_^

If there is one thing I hate about the wonderful world of web design nowadays it’s elitism. There are people on the internet who appear to be believing that because they have a popular validated website, and because they are good at pretty much everything web-oriented, it gives them right to bully people who aren’t half as good—or even people who are completely new to this world.

I think that is completely rude and very immature. (whereas these people tend to believe that’s not true.) What gives you the right to think you are better than someone else JUST because you can use proper CSS, because you have validated coding and because you’re the bloody queen/king of Wordpress? Absolutely nothing!
Sure, since you’re popular there’s bound to be people who steal/direct link your stuff. But there’s a mature way to be handling that. You see, there’s the possibility of sending a private e-mail instead of bítching about it on your blog.

To me there’s a big problem with bítching about it on a blog, it’ll attract bucket loads of drama! (I’m pretty sure that elitists love drama actually…) And this drama will usually result in a starting-out website owner giving up. And that’s just not fair. No matter what that person may have done wrong, nobody has the right to take away a way of escaping the real world.
Because, let’s just face it… Most of us started creating websites because we needed to get away from our real lives in some way and going on-line is a very safe way to do that. I think everybody needs to “get away” from it all every once in a while, and I ALSO think it’s right-down rude to be taking that possibility away by being so damned rude to a newbie.

It doesn’t matter if that newbie is 12 or if she’s 19. Age has absolutely nothing to do with it! Everyone was new at web design at one point in their lives, and everyone made a shítty website at some point in their lives. But, by bítching over something that this newbie probably didn’t even realize, you’re not helping them at all! You’re only making yourself feel better by having your horde attacking them. Wow, some way to build up an ego, no?

I think it is a lot better to actually be nice to the newbie who’s wronged you. He or she might not have realized that he or she was doing something wrong! Talking is always a better option than being an árse, it’s that way in real life, and it’s ALSO like that on-line. And with this I conclude my rant.

Anyhow, I will not be calling any names here. There has been numerous occasions lot of internet drama over the past summer and I really can’t even recall every damn thing that has happened, I just feel quite angry about it and needed to let this out. :)

SO, if you're a 'newbie' who got bashed by one of the big guys in web design, don't bloody give up! Consider it a lesson you just had to learn the hard way. Respond to it maturely and after that - don't look back, but become more determined to improve your skills.
