Right so I have a new site which is going to be released soon. I have never had my own domain and whatever before so I am just thinking what can I do to get it known out there? To get hits and whatever.
I know I am going to advertise like hell out theree! But what did you do on your first ever site to get it "known"?

Plug your button onto plug boards, tell all of your friends about it (they could help advertise you by using your stuff). I let my irl friends know I have a site, I also put my site on my Tdp profile (which is what my site is aimed for)

its the most effective form of advertising you can ask for. work on getting ranked for a term you KNOW is popular, and try to get as high up as possible. theres tons of search terms that get searched for 100s or even 1000s of times per day, and if you can get on the first page, you're guaranteed a good amount of those visitors.

over 50% of my traffic is search engine, probably more like 60%, then 20% direct (type in) traffic, and the other 20% is reffering sites. get into the search engines, make people remember your site, and keep coming back =]

Yea I tried adding my link to google but I don't think it worked. Can you show me how to do it?

theres no formula for how to do it. its called Search engine optimization (SEO)

you can start by NOT using link buttons and doing text links instead.
heres a hint. if you wanted to rank for "myspace dolls", guess what your text for your link should be? (the answer is NOT the name of your site)
another hint:
look at my signature, the very bottom link. take a guess what term im trying to rank for.

basically. but its not just that. google ranks the importance of your website based on how many links you have pointing to your site with a certain anchor text. there are other factors that go into it as well, but thats a good first step. make sure your pages have a good amount of text on them, and try to bold key phrases that you want to rank for as well.
